Tumbled
A tumbled finish gives an Old World, weathered look to tiles by tumbling them in a solution of water, sand, and mild acid. Typical sizes include 5/8" x 5/8" to 6"x 6" and sometimes even 8"x 8" are true tumbled pieces. Larger sizes are given a tumbled finish manually. Very small pieces like 5/8" x 5/8" and 1" x 1" are usually mounted on 12" x 12" meshes for ease of installation. The most commonly used size is 4" x 4" for straight and diamond patterns, or for use as accent pieces. Tumbled material is offered as pieces that are rustic and are not meant to be precisely cut pieces. Some in fact may have a large chip or a corner missing due to the tumbling process. Thicknesses may vary by 1 to 2 mm. Care should be taken during installation to ensure an even surface on the completed project.
